We never thought that we would be wanting to see some rainy days in the winter time. The S. C. Supreme Court Tuesday struck down a law prohibiting the media from publishing the names of juveniles charged in crimes, saying it infringed on the First Amendment of the U. S. Constitution. The justices also threw out a family court contempt citation against The Orangeburg Times and Democrat and five other news organizations that published the name of a 13-year-oId boy charged in two killings. Dr. Sidney Gosnell has been hired as superintendent of the Cherokee County School District. A native of Campobello, Dr. Gosnell is a former principal at Stearns School in Columbus. President Reagan was to lift the remaining controls on oil prices Wednesday. The action could raise gasoline prices as much as 12 cents a gallon. Tonight at 8:30 Chris Borden brings “Yougoslavia — An Adriatic Adventure" to the Fine Continued On Back Page Nurse Refresher Course Planned A refresher course for inactive registered nurses who wish to update their skills and credentials in order to reenter the nursing profession is being planned for spring. The course is designed to enable inactive registered nurses to review and update nursing knowledge and skills related to planning and providing nursing care to patients with medical and surgical conditions. The course will require four days of combined classroom instruction and clinical work each week for eleven weeks If enough inactive nurses in the Hendersonville area register for the course, thflr clinical phase of training will be held at Pardee Hospital. Anyone interested in obtaining more information about the program may call the Mountain Area Health Education Center, Department of Nursing, Asheville, N. C. 1-285-0881 Inquiries should be made before February 4.1981. Paper And Can Drive Is Feb. 10 The Polk Central Band is conducting a Paper and Can Drive. The deadline date for the paper drive is Feb. 10th and the deadline date for the can drive is Feb. 17th. Anyone who has a substanial amount of paper or cans may call Mr. Senn at Polk Central to arrange for someone to pick it up. Gymnastic Meet In Landrum Saturday The Sixth Annual Landrum High School Gymnastic Invitational is Saturday, January 31, 1981. High School teams from around state will be involved in this year's competition. Compulsory competition begins at 1:00 p.m. and optional competition begins at 7:00 p.m. The meet will be at Walden Gymnasium on the Landrum High School Campus. The public is invited. This year’s Landrum High School team is the youngest team in five years. The team has one senior, two freshmen, four eighth graders and four seventh graders. The team needs to gain competitive experience. With experience it has the potential to become a very strong team according to Coach Dan Young. Little League Meets Sunday The Polk County Little League meeting will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Tryon Town Hall All interested persons are invited. Officers will be elected and a decision will be made as to when Little League tryouts will be made. Grass Fire The Landrum Volunteer Fire Department was called to a grass fire Monday afternoon at the Gene Horton residence on Laurel Ave. Thanksgiving Service The Christian Science Church in Tryon will hold a Thanksgiving Service for the return of the hostages today at 12 noon at the church on New Market Road. The public is invited. Cattlemen Meet Tonight At 7 The annual meeting of the Polk County Cattlemen's Association will be held tonight at 7 o'clock at the Polk County 4-H and Youth Center. Clint Reese, Executive Secretary of the N. C. Cattlemen’s Association will be the guest speaker Buy Home In Columbus Mr. and Mrs. Thomas B Holmes of Hayward. Calif, have purchased the Jesse Mills house in Oak Ridge East on Skyuka Rd near Columbus Mr. Holmes has retired from the Del Monte Food Co and has lived in various parts of the U S. while associated with them Mr. Holmes has been active with the Toastmasters Club in California.
